Between screens and cuts-outs, Daniel and SHN show their art!

Daniel Melim and collective brought life to “ Cultivo Rua ”, revealing work which the artists have been developing throughout their entire careers. Stencils, silk-screens, paintings, collages, engravings, posters, colour, identity, persistence, talent and collaboration are just some of the elements and characteristics which one encounters when visiting the exhibition. Daniel Melim, enchanted by the result of their combined work, told us “ SHN are my long-term friends and we’ve developed great work together. Working with them is brilliant, we manage to combine work and play ”.

And it’s not only through exhibitions that these artists share their work with the public, they also work directly with the local community through art workshops where they teach techniques such as stencilling (spraying paint through carefully cut-out card and paper stencils) and silk-screening (pushing paint through a fine-mesh screen). “ I enjoyed the workshops the most. Being able to share some of the techniques and be in contact with people is always a winner. I always end up thinking I learn more than I’m teaching. ” Says Daniel Melim.

Daniel and the SHN collective have a wealth of experience leading art workshops in communities, principally in São Paulo.

Melim grew up in the city of São Bernardo do Campo, São Paulo. Today he develops his artistic and educational projects there. Attitude and skate culture is at the centre of his work. He spent his youth doing graffiti on the streets of ABC Paulista, where he realised he could develop this art form that many people didn’t even consider art! He has been honing his craft since 2000, focusing on his stencil technique, which is his signature style. Another attention grabbing element of his work is his social engagement; for many years he has volunteered as an art-educator. In 2006 he started the social project Jardim Limpao (Big Clean  Garden). This project, which takes place in the suburbs of São Paulo is carried out by volunteers and invited artists and local activists who help develop activities such as capoeira, drumming, African dance, visual arts and graffiti. Daniel Melim displays his work in diverse settings both abroad and in Brazil, in locations like favelas and thick walls where he creates pieces like his 40m tall panel at Estacao de Luz, São Paulo. Another one of his standout pieces was his 2009 exhibition at MASP, the Sao Paulo Museum of Art and his 2008 exhibition at the Contemporary Gallery.

SHN are a collective that came to life in 1998 in Americana, Sao Paulo. It is made of Andre Ortega, Daniel Cucatti, Eduardo Saretta (also the curator OF Choque Cultural), Haroldo Paranhos, Kieber Botasso, Marcelo Fazzolini and Rogerio Fernandes aka CDR. With their motto ‘DIY’ and silk-screen prints SHR were able to win the acclaim and space they needed to develop other other forms of art. The multidisciplinary group brings together artists from different backgrounds, like music, dance, architecture, tattoos and video-production. SHR also makes poster, stickers, t-shirts, events, parties and props as well as exhibitions. They have already had their work on show at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Americana, and in the capital at the Memorial da Memorial da América Latina and the Gallery Choque Cultural. They also have a strong presence on the urban art scene and abroad.
