 Interview

alua e allba_web Culturart is proud to bring a bit more information about the cultural project Choro in Roda . After one year following different performances of the group, Culturart interviewed the former member Aluá Nascimento in order to bring the project even closer to our readers, giving them the opportunity to watch the last 2013 concert, which will happen on 5 th   December .

Alua Nascimento is a percussionist and vibraphonist, who has worked as musician in London since 2006.  He is the Choro in Roda founder, together with his colleague Alba Cabral, who also lives in London, since 2009, where she has been studying music (singing, percussion and guitar), performance and education. Since the project began, Alba has helped in the production and the group’s integration, playing percussion instruments.

Check out the interview and know about the project

You started the project in 2012… How can you see the development of the group from last year until this year? What have you learnt with your work and the group ?
It’s always a pleasure to work on the “B side” of the Brazilian music, the kind of music that let people surprised, as they do not know anything about even still sounds familiar to them. The lilted rhythms, sometimes more energetic, features the Brazilian music in general, so people quickly identify it and say “this definitely is a Brazilian song”. The mix of melodies with percussion is something very particular in the Brazilian music. So to promote this rich and extensive style of music will always be a pleasure. About our main learning, we are always trying to improve, make the production more efficiently. Also, we consolidated our partnerships, building a relationship over time based in trust. Moreover we greatly expanded the range of musical partners. This year, for example, we had the participation of musicians from Brazil, Germany and the Netherlands. In this way, new possibilities come up in every meeting .

You are the founder of the group, but do you count on the same partners since the beginning of the project? Do you have a partner that helps you to carry on the project?
Yes, I am the founder and my experience in working with talented musicians since I arrived in London 7 years ago led me to invite the group Contemporânea, with which I have worked previously in São Paulo. I invited them to be one of the sponsors of the Project, as they were also interested in show their face due to the Olympics 2012 in London. The other sponsor I count on is Tia Maria Music Bar, where I used to have my own gigs hosted. But we also have volunteers as a photographer, a video maker, video editor, graphic designer. In 2013, the Culturart also got involved in this project, helping us to promote our events!

Unlike other projects, you guys play the Chorinho, but also play samba and baião. Do you have an specific reason to do so?
Yes, we appreciate the diversity of rhythmic instrumental music. Our inspirations are the great masters of Brazilian music as Hermeto Pascoal, Pixinguinha, Jacob do Bandolin, Guinga, Sivuca, Osvaldinho do Acordeon and so on. Moreover, we prize for our own compositions or our friends’s compositions. It is a very pay back to have a place to play our own songs as, after all, we are here to create and recreate, and not just to play.

How would you describe the Choro in Roda in 2013?
Consolidation, learning, discoveries of new partners, public, success!

The last event of this year will be on 5 th  December, what people can expect from the event?
Music and good food! This edition features musicians who have previously participated in the project: Marcelo Ruas (cavaquinho), Giuliano Pereira (sax and flute), Luiz Morais (7 strings’ instruments), Fabricio Azevedo (percussion and vibraphone), Alba Cabral (percussion) and Aluá Nascimento (percussion and vibraphone).

Choro in Roda has happened every 2 months in Tia Maria Tapioca House and is sponsored by the Contemporânea Music Instruments and is supported by Culturart throughout the year. What is the recipe for these successful partnerships?
The success is a consequence of the responsibility of all parties in this work, the trust that was established in these relationships. Everybody wins with this, through the highlights that come with the project or bringing more people to the venue, or even creating more jobs for music professionals. At the end, the benefits are extended also to the music fans, people who come to prestige us. After all, who doesn’t keep a smile on the face after listening to good music? It is a good  medicine for the soul!

Is Choro in Roda still playing in 2014?  If you rely on our eagerness, definitely yes!

Thanks to ‘ We would like to thank all of those who participate in this project! Also to Culturart for the opportunity to promote our work
