The Brazilian anthem waxes lyrical about the radiant giant illuminated by the sun of the New World, the finial of the Americas. This lecture will attempt to provide a sketch of the migration and transformation of some key ideas brought to Brazil for over five centuries, which ensued in the creation of a diverse colossus Brazil, constituted of ‘ Brazils ’, unified by a common language and meta-language of unstinting patriotism allied with a joyful belief in its soft and virtually boundless power.

Nadia Kerecuk - Brazilian-British linguist of Ukrainian descent and historian of ideas in language sciences specializing in the history of grammar writing (esp. Brazilian and Portuguese, Ukrainian and Slavonic, English) and intellectual history, author, book reviewer, international speaker and published translator (literary and scientific), independent scholar, member of the Executive Committee of the Henry Sweet Society for Linguistic Ideas ( ). More recently, she wrote an essay on music, language, birdsong and emotion commissioned by the British Council for the UK-Brazil Artist Links Programme, gave lectures on her twenty-five research into the works of Oleksander O. Potebnia at the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences and the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy University in Ukraine and gave a keynote lecture and led workshops on reading for pleasure at the 2011 FLIT -Tocantins International Literary Fair in Brazil and a short lecture on intellectual legacy of Heitor Villa-Lobos. She has a major interest in the intellectual history of Brazil.
