Portuguese on the rise: why should you learn portuguese?

20 Apr, 2013

Brazil’s rise is already well known, as such so is the Portuguese language, especially Brazilian Portuguese as the English call it. This increase has happened over a number of years, the teacher Cláudia Padoan says, “ I started giving random classes for a small number of pupils as a result of people I knew through my job at an airline company as an interpreter”. Now she has six Portuguese classes with 12 students in each. She gives lessons in two schools, in an agency connected with businesses and in an NGO, as well as having private pupils. “The great change has happened in the past two years” she says.

In the past few years, as well as language school, universities in various countries have started courses, as is the case of King’s College. Nowadays, the university has almost 100 students learning Portuguese and lessons are a fusion of langugae learning and Brazilian culture. The language network Cactus, which offers Portuguese classes in blocks of 13, has also seen a growth in the number of students interested in such courses, increasing by 107% in the past five years according to Tink Carrick, their marketing director.

“Today, knowing portuguese is great for your CV” , says teacher Roberta Mallows, who assembled a recently launched Portuguese language and Brazilian culture course at Westminster University.

What is behind such a growth in interest?

According to the BBC, you professionals believe that knowing Portuguese seperates them from others in their career, or some even hope to find employment in Brazil. Also, there has been an expansion in numbers of foreign companies looking to invest and operate in Brazil. Finally, there is a growing worry amongst Brazilian expatriates in ensuring that their children have a good level of both spoken and written Portuguese.

Culturart wants to highlight this issue and suggest some courses which are starting this April. There is still time to sign up and learn Portuguese in the best way!!!
