The Clube dos Brasileirinhos is a small supplementary Saturday school with the objective to teach Brazilian Portugues to children from 4 to 11 year old. On the whole, the majority of children are Anglo/Brazilian descent but we also have other nationalities mixed with Brazilian heritage. The Portuguese is taught as an inherited language. This essentially means that our multilingual children have acquired Portuguese through their parent’s backgrounds and thus inherited all cultural and linguistic ties that bind their parents to their own native tongue.
The teaching of Portuguese as an inherited language differs from the traditional teaching of ‘foreign languages’ in that we cater specifically to our children’s linguistic and cultural needs and capabilities. It is widely recognised and respected within educational circles. It is a methodology that is fast gaining momentum as it sensitively explores and expands the knowledge children have already acquired from their family and social circles.
All lessons take place within a friendly and relaxed setting designed to encourage children to keenly explore and immerse themselves in our language without fear or trepidation. We nurture and encourage this by actively and creatively focusing and exploring all aspects of Brazilian culture, ranging from history, geography, the arts, folklore and myths and legends. We take a great deal of care to draw parallels with their daily lives in the UK. Children are encouraged to speak, read and write Portuguese through use of their imagination, creativity, games, plays, reading, storytelling etc.
We currently have 3 classrooms divided by age (4 to 5 year old, 6 to 8 year old and 9 to 11 year old). All our teachers are highly qualified, have a degree in education or child psychology. All teaching staff hold valid DBS (Discloring Baring a Service) checks. Each classroom has a team consisting of a dedicated teacher and teaching assistant to facilitate individual support and guidance for each pupil.
The Clube dos Brasileirinhos is coordinated by three mothers Claudia, Silvia and Alice. We follow the British academic calendar. Thus, the Autumn term will start on September 7th until the 14th of December , with half term on 02nd November. Fees are £ 11.50 for 2 hours lesson, the Autumn term will have 14 weeks, totaling £ 161.00, to be paid in advanced. We offer trial lesson and it will only be paid if the child continues.
Lessons take place every Saturday between 10:30 and 12:30pm. We ask for all children to arrive before 10:20am in order not to disrupt the lessons. We are located 5 minutes from St John’s Wood underground station (Jubilee Line). The school’s amazing facilities provide us with ample scope to support and explore creative learning, reproducing Brazilian street games in the playground; making full usage of the bright, airy and spacious classrooms gives their learning experience a really cheerful atmosphere they love to come to!
