How was the Marisa Monte show?

Before the show

The line was fairly short compared to the crowd in front of the theatre, who were mostly fans and Brazilians. Many already had their tickets out and ready to get a good place at the greatly anticipated show. At 7pm they were ready and waiting, and at 8pm the doors finally opened.

The show
At the start of the show, nine musicians were on stage, Marisa in the centre-front, a black transparent screen inbetween the stage and the audience and Maris’s voice opened the show in darkness. And so, the screen went up, everything transformed, colours were reflected across the stage and the first song “O que você quer saber de verdade” began, a song from the new CD which talks about freedom and peace. The show was hot, from beginning to end, even more so though at the end when many could no longer remain in their seats and got to their feet to sing along with the star.

The style, the movement, the colours all constantly changed from song to song. Marisa danced around the stage, played her guitar, gestured to the crowd and enraptured everyone. Her velvet voice was exactly like the CD. The tone was the same, nothing changed, more perfect than ever. As well as the sweetness, tuning and technique, the stage also continually changed with moving images that switched between black and white, taking the experience beyond the tumbling lyrics. Marisa showed her interpretation in every song, her expression, her being.

Marisa presented songs from the new CD, such as “Depois” which talks about a break-up, “Che Sono” which inspired “Ainda Bem”. And she didn’t leave out her old hits such as “Arrepio”, samba song “Infinito Particular”, “Beijar eu”, “Tô com sintomas de saudade”, “Na Mira”, the great theme “Velha infância” and the other success “Não vá embora.”, but clearly changing between hits and new material, all of which were so beautiful.

Marisa had little opportunity to talk with the audience but the moments she did, she spoke in a very natural English. Halfway through the show she spoke about Cássia Eller as one of Brazil’s greatest singers, following with an acoustic set, playing guitar, singing and also being accompanied by another guitar for some of her songs from “E.C.T.”.

If I could find one fault with the show, I would say that the singer’s microphone needed to be louder as it was quieter than the song overall. And the musical arrangement could have perhaps been a little more free, so that the musicians could improvise a little as they were all of an extremely high quality. But Marisa didn’t change the formula because she knows her audience well.

The tour
The singer is following on with a European tour, travelling through Paris, Madrid, Portugal, and in mid-May will return to Brazil to visit São Paulo, Campinas. After she will head to Buenos Aires, Miami, New York and return to São Paulo. The wonderful singer and powerful production left us all wanting more.

Antes do show
Fila consideravelmente pequena em comparação a população que aglomerava em frente ao teatro, em sua maioria, fãs e brasileiros. Muitos já tinham o seu ticket na mão, para garantir o lugar no show tão esperado. Às 7pm estava todos ali na espera e só quase 8 horas que as portas do teatro foram abertas.

O show
Na abertura, nove músicos no palco, Marisa no centro e na frente, uma tela transparente preta entre o palco e o público e a voz de Marisa falada abria o show, no escuro. E então, a tela subiu, tudo se transformou, cores surgiam pelos refletores no palco, e iniciava com a canção “O que você quer saber de verdade”, a música de trabalho do novo CD, que fala de liberdade e paz. O show todo foi caloroso, do começo ao fim, podemos dizer que mais no fim, onde muitos já não se aguentavam ficar sentados e ficaram de pé, para cantar junto a musa.

O repertório, o movimento, as cores variavam o tempo todo, entre uma canção e outra. Marisa dançou pelo palco, tocou seu violão e fez gestos e encantou a todos. Sua voz de veludo, parecia como no CD. Não mudava timbre, não mudava nada, mais afinada do que nunca. Além da doçura, afinação e técnica, o movimento de palco colorido comovente com imagens que também variaram entre preto e branco, além das palavras que caiam de cima mesmo em efeitos, Marisa mostrou a sua interpretação, em cada canção, sua expressão, o seu particular.

Marisa explorou canções do novo cd, como “Depois” que fala da separação de um casal, “Che sono”, que a inspirou “Ainda bem”. E não deixou de cantar aquelas antigas, conhecidas, como “Arrepio”, o samba “Infinito Particular”, “Beijar eu”, “Tô com sintomas de saudade”, “Na Mira”, o grande tema de novela “Velha infância” e outro sucesso “Não vá embora.”, mas claro variando entre conhecidas e as novas canções, tão românticas quanto.

Marisa teve poucos momentos de fala com público mas as que teve, foi em inglês e muito natural. No meio do show, fala de Cássia Eller como uma das grandes cantoras do Brasil, seguindo de um momento acústico, tocando voz e violão acompanhada de mais violão, onde cantou uma de suas canções “E.C.T.”.

Se fosse falar de algo que faltou, diria que o som poderia ter dado mais volume a voz da cantora que de fato, estava mais baixa que o som todo. E poderia ter arranjos um pouco mais livres, para que os músicos pudessem ter liberdade de improvisar, já que era todos de alta qualidade. Mas Marisa não muda a fórmula e pelo jeito conhece bem seu público.

A turnê
A cantora seguiu com a turnê pela Europa, passando por Paris, Madrid, Portugal, e no meio de maio retoma ao Brasil, passando por São Paulo, Campinas. Depois segue viagem para Buenos Aires, Miami, Nova York e volta a São Paulo. A simpatíssima cantora e poderosa produtora segue, deixando todos ainda na saudade.
