Jump in to the raw, zestful music of Brazilian composer Villa-Lobos.

This Total Immersion is a day of concerts, film and discussion exploring works by Villa-Lobos, who’s music was inspired by Bach, Rio cafe music and the sounds of the jungle.

11.00am Cinema 2 Talk
Simon Wright introduces the music of Villa-Lobos.
Free. (Limited capacity but admission guaranteed to Day Pass Holders)

1.00pm Milton Court Guildhall School musicians
Guildhall School musicians perform two of Villa-Lobos’ quintets, and his playful work for flute and cello Assobio a Jato. £12

3.00pm Cinema 2 Film Barbican Cinemas, The Discovery of Brazil
Humberto Mauro’s 1936 film telling of the claiming of Brazil for Portugal in 1500, with music by Villa-Lobos. Shown in Portuguese, with an introduction in English. £6

5.00pm Milton Court BBC Singers
Brazilian conductor Celso Antunes and the BBC Singers perform stunning choral music by Villa Lobos. £12

7.30pm Barbican Hall BBC Symphony Orchestra and BBC Symphony Chorus
Sakari Oramo conducts pianists Martin Roscoe and Kathryn Stott in Chôros No. 8, and Anu Komsi performs the popular Bachiana brasileira No. 5. Hear bizarre bird calls and monkey chatter in the contrapuntal textures of Villa-Lobos’ Chôros No. 10. £10-£32.
